4 Important Things to Know About a Herniated Disc

Both young and old, man or woman, overweight or slender, rich or poor – no matter who you are, one of the most common issues, nearly all of the world is susceptible to, is back pain. Back pain is by far, the most common complaint amongst adults in the US and the world beyond. This is a result of the back and moreover, the spine, being the main and most vital aspect of our skeletal system, necessary to a number of different bodily processes as well. The spine is actuallyis the body’s central support structure – it helps us to stay upright, and forges a connection to the different parts of the skeleton and connects the varying parts of the skeleton to one another, including the head, chest, pelvis, shoulders arms, and legs. In addition, the spinal cord is the main control center and most vital aspect of our central nervous system (CNS) allowing us to feel, sending and reviewing messages between nerves throughout the body – relaying these messages to and from the brain as well. According to Dr. Evan Baird, considered the top spine surgeon New Jersey has to offer, the spine’s action and structure have an important symbiotic relationship. The spinal cord is protected by a series of spinal bones known as vertebrae and in-between these bones are spinal discs – spongy discs that act as our spines shock absorbers and help ensure our movement and more. This structure is vital to the overall function of the spine, as well as its protection – making any injuries or trauma to this area a major concern. Considered the top spine surgeon New Jersey has in practice, Dr. Baird has helped countless patients to treat different spinal injuries, one of the most common being the herniated disc. A herniated disc, sometimes known as a bulging or ruptured disc, occurs when there is a tear or rupture in the outer lining of a spinal disc. When this happens, the nucleus of the disc is pushed out of the barrier – a very dangerous issue. To learn more about this common injury, Dr. Baird and the team at Comprehensive Spine Care offer us these important things to know.

· Herniated Discs Cause Drastic Structural Concerns

Considering that the spinal discs sit in-between each of our spinal vertebrae, they have a very important purpose. They act as a cushioning system for these bones so that they do not touch each other, which can cause a great deal of pain. When this cushion has broken down, not only does it put the vertebrae in danger, causing us immense pain, it also causes issues with our overall ability to absorb shocks of everyday movement, walking, running or jumping.

· Different Symptoms & Pain Issues

While a herniated disc is often synonymous with immense pain, some of them do not cause any pain at all. This is also quite dangerous though, as the pain is the main warning and reason a patient would seek help from a spine specialist. As the top spine surgeon New Jersey has in practice, Dr. Baird relies on the patient’s feelings as the first step in diagnostics, however, a herniated disc is also discovered during routine MRI’s or other clinical evaluations.

· Not Just a Trauma Injury

Yes, the main cause of a herniated disc is some type of injury, through an accident or moment of trauma. However, more than just a sudden trauma, herniated discs can also occur as a result of aging and the breakdown over time. As we age, our spinal discs will breakdown slowly, losing water, and drying out. This degeneration is also known as a condition called Degenerative Disc Disease. When the disc is weakened, it can easily rupture.

· Diagnosis Can Be Difficult

Because of the close proximity and the domino affect that often occurs as a result of spinal issues – disc damage can cause issues with the vertebrae or surrounding nerves, creating nerve compression (something pressing on the nerves causing pain). With all these fairly similar symptoms, and a domino affect of different conditions causing one another – it can be tough to figure out the root cause of all these issues, and what to treat when. As the top spine surgeon New Jersey patients rely on, Dr. Baird must often make tough decisions and use a variety of surgical methods in conjunction to treat these types of issues.
