4 Things to Know When Caring for Your Spinal Surgery Incision

When it comes to having surgery done, it is important for patients to clearly understand and identify the possible risks and numerous side effects that might be involved. And this inherent risk will increase exponentially depending on the type of surgery being performed and for that reason it is being performed. According to Dr. Evan Baird, known as the best spine surgeon NJ has to offer, while most every surgical procedure is dangerous and has a number of associated side effects that might be possible – few share the possibility for danger as with a spinal surgery procedure – even those that are known as minimally-invasive. Considering how sensitive of an area the spinal cord and spinal column actually are, it would make a lot of sense as to why the procedure has a high possibility for side effects. However, no matter how sensitive of any area the spine might be, being under the supervision of a smart and well-trained surgeon can help mitigate the possibility for a wide variety of side effects and unwarranted results. According to Dr. Baird the top spine surgeon NJ has to offer, the majority of issues and side effects arise as a result of the opening and closing of the incisions from the surgical procedure – making this a vital area of concern for patients. Here are some helpful tips for mitigating the possibility of damaging side effects as a result of your surgical incisions.

· The Proper Sutures & Closure

Caring for the incision post-procedure starts from the very beginning, the instance in which the surgeon is deciding to close up the incision. The best means of closing the surgical incisions is through the use of dissolvable sutures and then having the skin held with steri-strips. The dissolvable sutures will disappear on their own, most often not needing a doctor’s care. The steri-strips usually stay in place for two weeks and should be allowed to fall off once they have become loose.

· Doctor’s Orders

This might seem to be quite redundant, but you would be surprised by how many people completely violate this rule, no matter how big or how small of a surgical procedure they are having. The best thing you can do is to go to any and all follow-up appointments with your surgeon and discuss any possible issues or concerns you might have. In addition, ask for tips and tricks and important things to do for the incision.

· Avoid Exercise & Strenuous Work

The important thing to understand about a surgical incision is the fact that any strange or somewhat “quick” movements can easily cause the sutures to rip or the incision to open up wider than it was intended to after the surgeon had initially closed it.

· Avoid Water

Another common issue with surgical incisions during the recovery period is getting the area wet. According to Dr. Baird, the best spine surgeon NJ has in practice, getting the area wet can not only cause infection issues, or cause the incision to reopen. In most instances, surgeons will advise patients to avoid swimming in pools, sitting in hot tubs, taking baths, and in many instances they also advise patients to avoid any type of shower for the first few days to a week into the recovery period.
