Are You Suffering from Sciatica?

One of the most common issues amongst highly active individuals, especially those who are avid runners is leg pain and overall persistent, progressive weakness in the lower extremities. While such symptoms are often a product of muscle strains and overall soreness due to overuse, in many patients some issues, especially those in which patients experience progressive, radiating pains, point towards a condition known as sciatica. According to Dr. Evan Baird of Comprehensive Spine Care, considered to be the best spine orthopedic Clifton NJ has to offer, sciatica is a term used to describe the symptoms of leg pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that travel down the low back via the sciatic nerve in the back of the leg. Sciatica (sometimes known as radiculopathy) is a description of symptoms, not a diagnosis. A herniated disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and spondylolisthesis can all cause sciatica. In addition to those individuals who are highly active in terms of running and other sports, sciatica is also relatively common amongst patients who experience some type of trauma or overuse injuries on the worksite. This is why it is also considered to be a fairly common workers compensation injury Clifton NJ practice; Comprehensive Spine Care has treated countless individuals who experience these symptoms due to an accident on a construction site or possibly from working in a warehouse that requires heavy lifting. Read on to learn more about sciatica, and sciatica surgery.

For many patients, sciatica can be quite debilitating, as symptoms are commonly felt along the entire path of the sciatic nerve – extending from the lower back and radiating down the buttocks to the entire legs, usually on one side. According to Dr. Baird, the top spine orthopedic Clifton NJ has in practice, sciatica is most commonly characterized by the following symptoms, including:

· Pain: Sciatica pain is typically characterized as an almost constant burning sensation, combined with a shooting pain that begins in the lower back and buttocks, and radiates down the from and back of the thigh, the leg, and even the feet.

· Numbness & Weakness: Another scary symptom of sciatica is the presence of numbness and overall weakness in the back and legs. The numbness and weakness, is often interchangeable with bouts of tingling and burning.

· Symptoms on One Side: An interesting aspect of sciatica is that it will most commonly affect one leg. According to the best spine orthopedic Clifton NJ has practicing, Dr. Baird, patients will commonly experience feelings of overall heaviness, and weakness in the affected leg. Very rarely will both legs be affected at the same time.

· Induced by Posture Issues: Interestingly enough, a number of Comprehensive Spine Care, experienced the most pain when their posture changed. Essentially, their symptoms worsened when sitting down, trying to stand from a seated position, bending forward, trying to twist, lying down or even coughing. This is why it is such a debilitating workers compensation injury Clifton patients working jobs where they were either on their feet all day or had to move their body while carrying heavy objects were almost incapacitated due to the blinding pain. Often, symptoms are relieved by walking or applying a heating pad to pelvic area.

An important thing for patents to note about such symptoms is that not all leg pain is sciatica, as sciatica is specific to pain that originates from the sciatic nerve. Therefore, just because someone feels pain in the area, it is important to distinguish the other symptoms as well – such as the numbness, weakness, posture issues and more. In fact, while sciatica on its own is known as a common workers compensation injury Clifton spine specialists at Comprehensive Spine Care also warn patients that it may also be a product of an, often more severe, underlying medical condition. Some of the more common conditions known to cause sciatica include:

· Lumbar Disc Herniation

· Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

· Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease

· Spondylolisthesis

· Muscle Spasms

As well as other issues including joint dysfunction, tumors, bloods clots and more. For more information on sciatica, or to schedule your own consult on the subject, be sure to contact Comprehensive Spine Care today.
