Back pain is by far one of the most common issues across the US, amongst both men and women, regardless of age. With much of America being out of shape, back pain can result from a wide variety of normal, everyday tasks – from picking up a child out of their crib to moving heavy furniture across a room. And despite the prevalence of back pain and its often chronic nature, back pain is generally a result of more minor concerns such as muscle strain or simply the normal wear-and-tear associated with aging. However, some back pain is a sign of some greater, far more severe injury to the spinal region or the spine itself. The spine is one of the most vital, yet delicate areas of the body. The spinal area is composed of the spinal cord, a long structure made up of nerve tissue, that is the main component of our central nervous system (CNS), responsible for relaying the brain’s signals throughout the body. Surrounding the spinal cord, however, are a series of bones and fluid-filled discs, responsible for both protecting the spinal cord and providing us with our main bodily structure and uprightness. Considering that the spine is the epicenter of our nervous system, when an individual is suffering from a spinal injury it can cause pain along multiple areas of the body and have quite a devastating effect on their quality of life. At Comprehensive Spine Care, home to the top spine surgeon New Jersey has to offer in Dr. Evan Baird. With years of experience and an established collection of surgeons, Comprehensive Spine Care offers treatment for a wide range of spinal issues – from the simplest to the most highly-involved of spinal concerns. Generally, as is the case for any spine surgeon New Jersey spine specialist, Dr. Baird, prefers to try far less invasive measures before deciding upon surgery – as surgery to such a delicate area is quite complex and has a number of different possible complications. For those patients with back and spine issues, it is important to be as educated on the subject as possible before actually undergoing surgery. Here are three things to know before considering spine surgery.

· Don’t Wait Too Long
For those with any type of back or spine issues, or even issues in their extremities that may have an origin within the spine, they often make the mistake of waiting too long before considering surgery or getting an opinion from a spine surgeon. The fact is that you don’t have to wait until you are in debilitating pain to consider spine surgery. As the top spine surgeon, New Jersey has in practice, Dr. Evan Baird recommends patients get a solid opinion from a surgeon before the condition has progressed far enough to possibly cause lifelong damage. When it comes to spine issues, they are often very progressive and will only worsen without treatment – making them that much harder to remedy further down the line. Plus, if surgery isn’t what you want, a spine surgeon will be able to either provide you with other treatment options or a referral to another specialist who might deal with conditions closer to yours.

· However, Spine Surgery is Still a Last Resort
While it is definitely something to consider, spine surgery should only be used as a last resort treatment method, when other, less invasive treatments have proven to be ineffective. At Comprehensive Spine Care, Dr. Baird, considered the top spine surgeon New Jersey has to offer, will exhaust every treatment method possible before deciding to recommend surgical measures. This includes using spinal braces, anti-inflammatory drugs, prescription pain relievers, corticosteroid injections and more. This is important, as spine surgery is complex and can result in a variety of complications, therefore an experienced surgeon will only use it as a last resort.

· The Recovery Process
This is something you should absolutely be aware of, as the recovery process from spinal surgery can be highly involved and last weeks to months. For many patients, it may be a full year or more until they begin to feel normal again, but this is simply part of the process. the actual time and severity of your recovery is dependent on the severity of your initial injury, and the type of surgery that is performed. For some procedures, that are considered to be minimally-invasive, such as a microdiscectomy – in which a part or the entire ruptured or herniated disc is removed and replaced, you can often go home the same day or within one day. And for the next 4-8 weeks, your doctor may ask that you relax and ‘take it easy’, however you will not be bedridden for this time period. It is important to understand that regardless of what type of surgery you might undergo, you must be understanding that it will take time to recover before you can resume all your normal daily activities.

It is important to do your homework before you undergo any type of surgery, especially to an area as sensitive as the spine. For more information on spine surgery and your own spinal issues, contact ComprehensiveSpine Care today.
