3 Important Facts to Know Before Spinal Fusion Surgery

When it comes to the spine, there is no time to play around as it is by far one of the most sensitive areas throughout the entire body. According to Dr. Evan Baird, of Comprehensive Spine Care – home of the top spine surgery New Jersey has to offer, while there are countless spina surgery methods out there, by far the most common method performed for a variety of different spinal issues is known as spinal fusion surgery. While it might seem to be quite a daunting procedure, in true fact spinal fusion surgery is fairly simple to understand and quite easy to understand, as the name sort of gives it away to anybody who might be confused. According to Dr, Baird, the top spine surgeon in New Jersey, spinal fusion is exactly what it sounds like, an operation in which two or more vertebrae are permanently fused together – often due to some form of trauma or a severe accident that may have taken place some time ago. While it might certainly sound simple enough, the fact of the matter is that, there is a lot more that you should know about spinal fusion surgery, especially for those individuals who plan on having the procedure done themselves. To better help you understand spinal fusion, the team at Comprehensive Spine Care, the home of the top spine surgery New Jersey has to offer, is giving us these important tips to know before considering it ourselves.

● Spinal Fusion is Often Done Minimally Invasively

Compared to how they were done some years ago, spinal fusion surgery is far less severe of a procedure, and offers far less overall trauma to the patient. According to the top sine surgeon in New Jersey, Dr. Evan Baird, in today’s world, minimally invasive methods are used whenever possible – if possible. Generally, a traditional open fusion involves a large incision in the back to expose the spine, then cutting through and retracting the thick spinal muscles. For minimally invasive fusions, the surgeon requires only a small incision (1 to 2 inches) and maneuvers special instruments between the muscles, pushing them aside and protecting them, to reach the spine. At Comprehensive Spine Care they use all the latest and greatest tools and techniques allowing them to avoid having to cut out thick muscle tissue, and ensuring they can use the minimally invasive method for whatever surgery they can – this is why they are considered to offer the top spine surgery New Jersey has these days. Using such advanced tools, spinal implants are then placed with specialized techniques through this small incision. Microscopes enable the physician to view the area with magnification, allowing for more surgical precision. According to Dr. Baird, the top spine surgeon in New Jersey, after minimally invasive fusion, patients experience less blood loss, less postoperative pain, lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery; many are able to leave the hospital the day after the procedure, compared to up to a week of hospitalization for traditional surgery.

● Fusion Surgery Shouldn’t Be Your FIrst Option

The most important thing for patients to understand is that while surgery might be the key to treating many spine conditions and issues, it shouldn’t be the absolute first resort for anyone. In fact, surgery itself should ALWAYS be considered the final option, as there are countless other non-invasive methods that we must try before opting for surgical intervention as it has the most inherent risks, and the highest possibility to leave patients with lasting damage. Its important that before anything we try things like physical therapy, electrostim therapy, injectable treatments, oral medications, and even rest, as this can often be the answer to a variety of different issues.

● Arthritic Issues May Be at Play

Often, when an individual has spinal fusion surgery, they may believe that this will be their cure-all and their back and spine will automatically be 100% better in no time. However, this is not the case at all. Once a fusion heals, the level or levels that have been fused should not cause further pain or require further treatment down the road. However for many patients once this area heals, they may feel pain in an additional area, this will tell you that the patient in reality has arthritic issues in their vertebrae, at certain other levels of the spine – that may not have been operated on at the time. Its vital that patients understand that one fusion cannot cure the whole spine, and with arthritic issues, there might be much more surgery needed in the future.
