How Do Surgeons Decide to Go Through with Spine Surgery?

Having to have spine surgery is by far one of the scariest things someone can be told they need to have. In fact, even the top spine surgeon New Jersey has to offer, Dr. Evan Baird will generally only recommend it as a final, last resort for patients – as it can be quite invasive. The spine is the most sensitive areas of the body, and in many cases, a quarter inch slip to the left or right can spell disaster for patients. However, before visiting the spine surgeon northern NJ patients should be advised that there are a number of important things they must consider and factors that they should understand about their own health and spinal wellness. The fact is that these days, while the spine is still just as sensitive and surgery is still just as scary, many, if not most doctors, are using minimally-invasive spinal procedures, that make it far safer and allow patients to recover much sooner from their procedure. Below we will better help you understand the differences between conventional surgery and a less invasive route.

Generally, when seeing a patient, Dr. Evan Baird, considered to be the top spine surgeon New Jersey has in practice, will perform as series of evaluations to better understand their symptoms. In many cases, where a patient will present with extremity symptoms, lower back pain, or neck pain – there will be different protocols that must be followed – with the last two generally being the most concerning. After visiting the spine surgeon northern NJ patients will usually be asked to continue about their lives, and attempt physical activity (in a scenario where the patient may not exhibit any advanced, only minor symptoms). As the days wear on and they continue to be physical, the issue may or may not resolve itself on its own – however, regardless of what happens a follow up visit must generally be scheduled. In many cases, back or neck pain is usually just a product of soreness or other issues where either rest, or even physical activity will help remedy them.

In many cases, when the symptoms have not remedied themselves, and may even worsen, as the top spine surgeon New Jersey has in practice, will move forward with further testing and evaluation. The next step is usually to use other treatment methods such as over the counter medication like pain management medication both prescription and OTC, or anti-inflammatory medication. Most of the time after this follow up appointment with a spine surgeon northern NJ patients are generally healed or at least no longer in pain after the swelling goes down and they have some minor pain management. However, for some patients these will not do much but slightly mask the pain, and further evaluation, including X-rays and other imaging tools may become needed.

The fact is that the spine is such a sensitive area, that operating on it is the last resort, even for those doctors like Dr. Baird, who do it every day. The vast majority of patients with spine problems can be treated in a conservative and non-surgical fashion. With very few exceptions, we recommend that all patients try physical therapy, home exercises, medication and often times spinal injections prior to considering surgery. Usually, with these non-surgical methods of treatment, patients can see much improvement, if they aren’t cured all together. However, when things get bad for someone is when they are actually having issues with either the spinal cord, or the bones or vertebrae around it. Often, even the strongest of pain medication, and anti-inflammatory shots or meds will not help, but only mask the pain slightly. Generally, as these spinal issues get worse, the individual will experience progressively worse symptoms like pain in their extremities, loss of feeling, numbness, tingling sensations, burning and other motor skill issues. In a case where the non-invasive treatments, and physical therapy have little to no effect – it is likely and probable that the patient will require surgery. And even in these instances, many doctors are now using less invasive techniques, that use different approaches, smaller incisions, and far less invasive points from which to access the spine.
