What is Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease?

One of the most common conditions affecting the lower back area, this form of degenerative spine disease occurs as a result of the overall wear and tear of the back and lower spine bones and joints, as well as the intervertebral discs that separate each one. According to Dr. Evan Baird, considered to be the best spine surgeon Bergen County NJ has in practice, and his team at Comprehensive Spine, while this is an all too common condition, it can often be mistaken for another type of back issue – for instance, a bulging disc, or a herniated disc. Learn more about this common form of spinal breakdown by reading on below.

What is Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease?

DDD as it is often called, is degenerative disc disease, and when it has the word lumbar in front of it and within any other spinal conditions, it means its affecting the lower area of the spine, as opposed to the upper part known as the cervical. As the Best Spine Surgeon NJ has to offer, Dr. Baird has helped a number of patients with such issues, of all walks of life. However, despite that the vast majority of DDD patients are those who are older and have possibly even suffered from some form of a back injury beforehand.

The truth is that lumbar degenerative disc disease is fairly straightforward, as it occurs over time, due to the normal wear and tear of the intervertebral discs, which are meant to act like shock absorbers for the back, spine and neck area. in some, more rare cases DDD can also occur as a result of some one-time shock or trauma issue – again most likely in older individuals as their spinal discs have more than likely begun to wear out due to aging. It involves small tears in the annulus of the disc (elastic outer ring of collagen fibers) and lack of water content of the nucleus of the disc (soft gel center). The degenerative cascade can lead to disc bulging, development of bone spurs (or osteophytes), and loss of disc space height and/or alignment, which can cause nerve impingement.

Common Symptoms of DDD

The main method by which we are able to diagnose lumbar DDD is through the symptoms, which while they can in some ways mimic other issues, there are generally one or two items that make the specific issue stand out – as well as its placement near the cervical or lumbar spine area. some of the most common symptoms include:

· Pain at the site of the injury.

· Pain, numbness, or tingling in the legs.

· Strong pain that tends to come and go.

· Pain is worse when bending, twisting, and/or sitting.

· Lying down relieves pressure on the spine.

How Can You Treat DDD?

According to Dr. Baird, the best spine surgeon NJ has practicing, treatment methods can be both surgical and non-surgical and it will often depend on your specific condition, and its severity. Once a doctor has been able to diagnose the issue as degenerative disc disease, they will often provide you with an overview of standard non-surgical and surgical treatments for lumbar degenerative disc disease. When it comes to non-surgical treatment options, Dr. Baird may often recommend a treatment including:

· Physical therapy and strengthening exercises.

· Rest and a restriction of physical activity.

· Injections (corticosteroids) to help reduce the pain and swelling.

· Medications and analgesics to reduce pain and swelling; typical medications include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

When it comes to surgical means of treatment however, you might require some type of a fusion procedure like a PLIF (posterior lumbar interbody fusion). However, surgery is dependent on a variety of factors. For more information on degenerative disc disease, be sure to contact us today.
